When news first traveled through PROTECT about the death of Nicholas Pekearo, it brought both sadness and pride.
Like millions of other Americans, we had seen the news about the death of two auxiliary police officers in New York.
We knew that Nicholas Pekearo didn't have to be out there on the street that night. We knew that he had given his life in a fight to protect the people around him. And we knew that he was too young and full of humanity to be taken so soon from his family.
But what many didn't know was that Nicholas Pekearo had been taken from our family too. Nick was a card-carrying member of the National Association to Protect Children.
PROTECT sends our deepest sympathies to the family of Nicholas Pekearo. Over the coming days, we would also like to share what Nick and his legacy mean to our PROTECT family and to the cause of child protection for which he fought. We invite friends, family, law enforcement colleagues, coworkers and PROTECT members to send us your memories, tributes and suggestions for recognizing Nicholas Pekearo. We'll publish excerpts here on the National Association to Protect Children website and share them with his family.
