What the Circle of Trust Bill Means to Children
Eve Shatto Walton
He violated his daughter…
He violated his stepdaughter…
He violated his brother’s two daughters…
He was convicted in California… of sexually violating his five-year old stepdaughter…
He plead guilty to the charges…
He walked…
AND…
For fifteen years he has lived with another daughter… in Pennsylvania… He has complete and unrestricted access to her…
AND…
Nobody is stopping him…
Not child protection services…
Not law enforcement…
Not the courts…
Not “the family”…
Not child advocacy groups…
NOT even you…
BUT, MAYBE…
If laws change…
And attitudes change…
Someday…
He won’t be able to hurt her anymore…
Eve Shatto Walton is widely known, admired and respected, but seldom by name. She is the heart and soul behind PROTECT's face to the world, our website. On the front lines of our Circle of Trust campaign at every twist and turn, Eve not only brought news of our work to the world, but she was crucial in enabling us to organize and mobilize our supporters effectively. She has also inspired many of us personally, and her essay is a testament to her ability to remind others about the true horror of children left unprotected. Those who still talk about PROTECT’s hard-hitting response to the Circle of Trust bill’s defeat in 2004 have Eve Shatto Walton to thank. Eve and her husband, David, are founders of PROTECT’s One Hundred Friends Society. She is also a board member of PROTECT’s charitable arm, Promise to Protect.
