One of the most celebrated basketball coaches in America learned an early lesson in how an abuse victim can become a protector.
Carolina Tarheels Coach Roy Williams opens up about his childhood in an
autobiography set to hit stores next month. In an early-released copy
obtained by The Raleigh News and Observer, Williams revealed that he
ended his father's reign of terror at age 14.
“Babe” Williams was alcoholic and abusive to Roy’s mother for years,
says Coach Williams. One day, his father came over to the house where
Roy and his mother were living.
“He was drunk and angry. It was the worst time I can ever remember.”
retells Williams. “He went after my mom. I pulled him off her...and
grabbed a bottle and put it under his chin...My dad never, ever came
back to our house again.”
As his father lay dying in 2004, his son visited him. “...I learned a
lot from you,” Roy Williams told him. “...I just saw what you did and I
did the opposite....”
Williams’ book is titled Hard Work: A Life On and Off the Court.
