Police Chief to CPS: Do your job Print E-mail
Tuesday, 03 March 2009 02:49
Maybe the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services will listen to Police Chief Joe Edwards next time. Edwards and his angry officers told them not to return a newborn baby to her mother, after the woman was accused of trying to drown the child in the toilet. DCF ignored Edwards, allowing the woman to take the infant home from the hospital.

But when Edwards' officers found cause to get into suspect's house, they found the decomposing body of another baby, reports the Belleville News Democrat.

It wasn't the first time Edwards criticized the social work agency, says the paper. "Edwards also took on the department in 2006, when he filed criminal charges against George Schneider, who pleaded guilty to domestic battery and admitted he struck, slapped and spanked his 4-year old daughter in a Columbia parking lot."

"DCFS investigators designated the allegation 'unfounded' after the investigator was 'unable to document credible evidence of child abuse or neglect.'"

"They are all about reuniting families," says Chief Edwards. "And I am, too, if it doesn't put the child's safety at risk."

News reports say the woman works as a teacher's aide with autistic children.
