State to inspect all children's group homes Print E-mail

Louisiana's Department of Social Services says it will inspect and review all 67 of the state's group homes for children, after new charges of abuse and health care neglect in the facilities. The Associated Press is reporting that the review will be done over the next three months. It comes after two reports that found problems in the group home system, a December report by the Lousiana Legislative Auditor and a June report by the Advocacy Center, a nonprofit organization. Interim DSS Secretary Kristy Nichols says the system, which cares for children taken into state custody, "is overburdened [and] not as transparent as we would like..." The state auditor found that 90 percent of the group homes sampled had deficiences.
