The Michigan Parole Board decided to release an inmate when the minimum sentence of six years was fulfilled. The convicted pedophile had been sentenced to six to thirty years. He was sent back to prison about a month later after the judge reversed the parole board decision on an appeal from the county prosecutor.
Inmates conviction: 1st degree criminal sexual conduct, victim younger than thirteen.
His confession: Molesting others between seven and twelve years of age.
Two of the victims: a 17-year-old relative and, while on probation, a 21-year-old learning-disabled female
His explanation: "I was viewing porn a lot, I was overweight with low self-esteem and was seeking affection inappropriately."
The Detroit News quotes Judge Michael Warren:
"Despite the Parole Board's conclusion to the contrary, there is no reasonable assurance that [he] will not become a menace to society or to the public safety."
"To the contrary, [he] is a serial, unreformed pedophile who will likely prey on society and commit additional sexual assaults against minors once he is released to an unsuspecting public. If this is not an abuse of discretion, nothing is."
[His] "personality is a recipe for disaster upon parole."
The assistant prosecutor reported that the man's prison assessment said he "had not been fixed." was not remorseful and blamed his victims.
Appreciation goes to the Oakland County Prosecutor Jessica Cooper for appealing not only this parole board decision but others as well.
