The public got a disturbing glimpse into the daily search for thousands of child pornography victims yesterday, when authorities in Nevada released still photos of a young child and sexual predator taken from a videotape.
The Nye County Sheriff's Department says the tape shows a 4-5 year old girl being sexually assaulted by a man. Investigators have searched through clues in the videotape, but say now they need the public's help identifying the child and perpetrator (Link). The case, though surprising to most Americans, is just one of thousands of similar cases, unsolved by overwhelmed, outnumbered and under-funded anti-child pornography agents. Long-awaited legislation in Washington sponsored by Senators Joe Biden and Barbara Boxer would give federal, state and local law enforcement agencies the resources they desperately need to rescue children.
PROTECT national board member Alison Arngrim was interviewed last night on CNN's Nancy Grace about the case. Responding to law enforcement reports that the girl in the video appears not to show emotion, Arngrim zeroed in on the fact that exploited children are typically preyed upon by adults they know, not strangers. "This guy has been doing this to this little girl for a really long time... which is really common. And the fact that he feels confident enough to be as brazen as he is, this likelihood is it's her father, her stepfather, her uncle or someone living in the home."
