A boy left in a reportedly unsafe home for over a decade by Nevada social service workers has died, and his mother has been charged with murder and abuse. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that Patrick Atkins died after his mother told emergency room doctors that he had no health issues, despite a "history of chronic kidney disease." Shortly after admittance, Patrick died.

In the first 20 months his life, Patrick's mother was referred to child protective services three times for improper supervision and neglect. "In-home supervision and services" were offered. Nine days later: case closed.

Soon, CPS was called again. More "services" offered; none utilized. Four days later: case closed.

The Review-Journal states that doctors warned that without treatment, Patrick would die.

Within a year, Patrick's school nurse and his doctor reported his mother for neglecting his treatment. the claims were deemed "unsubstantiated".

Over a 10 year span, CPS was called 5 times about Patrick's welfare.

In 2006, all medical treatment for Patrick stopped. In 2009, he was dead.

His mother has been arrested on murder and child abuse charges.
