Nevada cuts endanger child protection Print E-mail

Despite at least six child abuse deaths in three months, Nevada is planning deep cuts to the Clark County Family Services Department, which serves children in Las Vegas.

The Family Services Department currently employs 109 child abuse investigators. Officials say if proposed cuts of $2.5 million go through, 32 of those investigators will have to be laid off.

Within the first three months of 2009, six children were dead due to severe mistreatment. Three more cases are being investigated and may be added to that death toll.

A 2006 law suit, filed by the National Center for Youth Law, accused the county and state of failure to protect children. Paired with public outcry, the state and county opted to increase funding for child protective services.

Senior counsel for NCYL, attorney Bill Grimm, responded to the cuts, "…some really horrible consequences and some of those will be reports of abuse that will not be investigated and children left at risk to be re-abused, and some will die."
