New York City officials recently audited a nonprofit that takes millions to work with children and families, finding that the group did not bother to do criminal background checks on its own caseworkers, as required.
The report finds that the Child Development Support Group (CDSG) also
did not "make required contact with the families" or "adequately
monitor" their services, reports the New York Daily News. The News
says New York's Administration for Children's Services (ACS) "is
relying more than ever on preventative programs to stop child abuse," a
strategy that does not appear to be measurable in an audit. "If [CDSG]
are entrusted to help families keep children out of foster care, are
they doing this job?" asked ACS Controller William Thompson. "Nobody
knows."
