Sex offender evaluator diagnoses himself Print E-mail

A North Dakota psychologist who has produced approximately 145 official evaluations of sex offenders in the last decade says he has been struggling with "compulsive viewing" of child pornography.

The Fargo Forum newspaper reports that Dr. Joseph Belanger, 60, is attempting to explain himself to the North Dakota Board of Psychologist Examiners, after federal agents seized his computer in a child pornography investigation. The paper says that Belanger wrote to the Board, saying he had "survived some horrific abuse in (his) childhood," which caused an attraction to young girls. The doctor, who apparently doesn't limit his practice to western medicine, added that he and his Zen teacher agreed "it was just my karma come to fruition." The hospital says it has reviewed the cases Belanger evaluated and claims it "did not find anything inconsistent with professional standards." Belanger has not been charged criminally.
