Fairfield County, Ohio's county child protection agency held a Child Abuse Prevention Month observance last week... right after announcing it is cutting its only child abuse investigator.

The Lancaster Eagle Gazette reports that Gary Pierce will lose the job he's held for over 30 years on May 1st. With a $2.5 million budget deficit, Job and Family Services determined, saying Pierce's position isn't a mandatory one, that it could no longer afford the child abuse detective.

In addition, five case workers with CPS will also lose their jobs.

According to the Eagle Gazette, there has been a 75% increase in the number of calls reporting abuse between 2003 and 2008.

Pierce's case files will be distributed among six Lancaster police detectives, only one of which is trained to interview children.

Here is the elected leadership of Fairfield County. Here is the proud agency itself.
