Oregon: Foster kids on psychiatric drugs, little monitoring Print E-mail
Monday, 26 November 2007 19:00

The Oregonian has published an extensive story on the heavy use of psychiatric drugs with foster children, with little oversight or accountability for their care.

"More than one in four Oregon children in foster care--some as young as 2--are being given powerful psychiatric drugs..." says the paper. "The state's child welfare system creates incentives for foster parents that could encourage psychiatric drug use: The meds make the kids less trouble. And the foster parents can be paid double for the 'special needs' of kids on psychiatric drugs."
