If you don't know who Alicia Kozakiewicz is, then you must be new to PROTECT.
Alicia was lured, abducted, and tortured by a Herndon, Virginia man in his basement for four days before being rescued by the Western Pennsylvania Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, the FBI, and Mary Beth Buchanan. Ms. Buchanan was the US Attorney for the Western District who invoked a controversial emergency clause in the Patriot Act in order to save Alicia's life.
Questioned later about her decision, Buchanan stated, "In cases like this, hours matter. Minutes matter."
Last month, PROTECT's Director of Legislative Affairs Camille Cooper joined Alicia, her parents, friends, and Ms. Buchanan at the Jefferson Awards where Alicia was an honored recipient of the award for her outstanding volunteerism and contribution to her community and the nation.
Alicia has traveled around the country teaching Internet safety to students, lobbying for state funds as part of her partnership with PROTECT on "Alicia's Law," and helping push The PROTECT Our Children Act of 2008 through Congress by moving members of the powerful House Judiciary Committee to tears.
Ms. Buchanan is now running for Congress in Pennsylvania. if leaders are people who have the ability to make life-saving split second decisions in times of crisis, Ms. Buchanan is going to give the incumbent a serious run for his money.
Congratulations Alicia and good luck to Ms. Buchanan, we'll be watching this race closely.
