Steve Shannon, who ran for Attorney General on a platform of rescuing children from the State's known child pornography traffickers, lost last night to Ken Cuccinelli.
Shannon was swept away in a Republican landslide, his 2009 election results closely tracking the 60-40 spread in Virginia's governor's race.
Although Shannon will not have a chance to keep his promises to rescue children as Attorney General, we believe his groundbreaking campaign will raise the bar across the board for Virginia politicians, including Attorney General Cuccinelli. It also points the way for public officials in 49 other states. For that we owe Steve Shannon a debt of gratitude.
From the Richmond Times-Dispatch: "Republican Sen. Ken Cuccinelli was elected attorney general tonight over Democratic Del. Stephen C. Shannon in a battle between two lawmakers from Fairfax County, according to unofficial returns.
Cuccinelli ran as a strict constructionist who pledged to protect the Virginia constitution and the state’s right-to-work law.
Shannon, a former prosecutor, focused his campaign on the top-cop aspect of the job by pledging to prosecute Internet predators personally if necessary. He attempted to paint Cuccinelli as a social crusader who would use the office as a platform to advance his personal agenda."
