Mike Huckabee is pointing fingers, after the man he let out of prison allegedly raped a child and murdered four police officers. But the politician has a point.
In his statement , the former Arkansas Governer and presidential candidate practically tortures the English language to avoid taking any responsibility for his own role in commuting the sentence of Maurice Clemmons, which set loose a violent and psychotic criminal and destroyed lives.
But Huckabee's right that he's not the only one to blame. News reports about Clemmons expose a mental health system so underfunded and dysfunctional that it doesn't take action when faced with a continuing pattern of menacing and dangerous behavior.
Worse, the Clemmons case highlights how greatly crimes against children are trivialized by the criminal justice system. Clemmons was released from prison on bail after being charged with raping a child, reportedly a relative.
It looks like the bail bond company, Jail Sucks Bail Bonds, cared more about protecting their investment than the Washington court system cared about protecting children. Jail Sucks placed a GPS tracking gadget on Clemmons. Clemmons cut the device off his leg before walking into a coffee shop and gunning down four police officers, who were parents of nine children.
The State of Washington didn't even give as much regard to keeping Maurice Clemmons away from his child victim. –Grier Weeks
